Connecticut Vehicle Cost Guide
Connecticut Vehicle Taxes: Purchase, Lease and Trade
Connecticut vehicle cost can include sales or use tax, registration/title charges and annual local property tax. Purchase, lease, private sale, trade-in and out-of-state transactions are not calculated the same way.
The Connecticut tax picture in one minute
Connecticut DMV says licensed-dealer purchases generally use a 6.35% sales and use tax, or 7.75% for vehicles over $50,000, and allows full qualifying trade-in credit when computing that tax. Leases have their own taxable-charge rules. Vehicles are also subject to local property tax. Exact treatment can change with the transaction, buyer and vehicle, so use a written worksheet and current CT DMV/DRS guidance.
Purchase tax
Generally 6.35%, with a 7.75% rate for many passenger/combination vehicles over $50,000.
Trade credit
CT DMV says full trade-in credit is allowed on qualifying licensed-dealer purchases.
Lease tax
Many lease charges are taxable; the agreed-upon value can affect the applicable rate.
Property tax
A separate local motor-vehicle property tax can apply after registration.
How common Connecticut transactions differ
This table is a decision guide, not individualized tax advice.
| Transaction | General current treatment | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed-dealer purchase | Tax based on purchase price, with general 6.35% / over-$50,000 7.75% rules. | Taxable selling price, vehicle class, exemptions and trade credit. |
| Private sale | DMV may use the NADA average trade-in value or bill-of-sale value, whichever is higher. | Documentation and refund procedure if actual value is lower. |
| Trade at licensed dealer | Full qualifying trade-in credit allowed in computing sales/use tax. | Trade allowance, payoff and taxable difference shown separately. |
| Long-term lease | Tax applies to taxable lease charges; rate can be based on agreed-upon value. | Taxable fees, trade allowance, monthly tax and contract disclosures. |
| Lease buyout | A new sale occurs at the purchase option, with tax based on that transaction. | Buyout bill of sale, tax collected and DMV documents. |
| Out-of-state purchase | Credit may apply for tax paid elsewhere; CT may collect a shortfall. | Invoice, tax receipt, title, VIN/emissions and current registration rules. |
How does Connecticut trade-in tax credit work?
CT DMV says full trade-in credit is allowed when computing sales and use tax for a vehicle purchased from a licensed dealership. A simple illustration: if a qualifying $40,000 vehicle purchase includes a $10,000 trade allowance, the taxable difference may be $30,000 before other taxable items. This is an illustration only; the written transaction and current rules control.
A payoff does not determine the trade allowance. Show trade value, loan payoff and resulting equity separately.
What happens when a vehicle is over $50,000?
CT DMV and DRS currently publish a 7.75% rate for many passenger or combination vehicles when the relevant sales price or agreed-upon lease value exceeds $50,000. The threshold calculation can include taxable items and is not necessarily reduced below the threshold by a trade. Ask the dealer to show the taxable amount and applied rate.
How are leases taxed in Connecticut?
Connecticut DRS guidance says down payments and periodic payments, finance charges, acquisition/origination charges and many termination charges can be taxable. It also describes a trade-in allowance when a customer trades an owned vehicle into a lease. Because lease tax treatment is detailed, compare written disclosures rather than estimating from payment alone.
What tax applies to a lease buyout?
The lease and the later purchase are separate transactions. CT DMV requires a bill of sale from the leasing company showing sales tax collected, plus title, odometer, insurance and registration documents. DRS guidance says the rate at buyout is based on the sales price at the conclusion of the lease, not the original lease’s agreed-upon value.
What is Connecticut motor-vehicle property tax?
CT DMV notes that motor vehicles are subject to local property tax under state law and that the local tax collector computes and bills it. This is separate from sales/use tax collected in the purchase or lease transaction. Ask your town for current assessment, billing and exemption questions.
What if the vehicle was purchased out of state?
CT DMV says credit may be available for tax paid to another state when supporting documentation is provided. If the other-state tax was lower than the Connecticut amount due, the difference may be collected at registration. Title, VIN verification, emissions, insurance and timing requirements can also apply.

Frequently asked questions
What is Connecticut sales tax on a vehicle?
CT DMV generally lists 6.35%, or 7.75% for many vehicles over $50,000. Exemptions and transaction details can change the result.
Does a trade-in reduce Connecticut vehicle sales tax?
For qualifying purchases from a licensed dealership, CT DMV says full trade-in credit is allowed when computing sales and use tax.
Is the tax rate determined before or after the trade?
Connecticut guidance indicates the over-$50,000 rate can be determined from the relevant sales price/agreed-upon value rather than simply the post-trade difference. Verify the worksheet.
Are lease payments taxed in Connecticut?
Yes. DRS guidance says periodic payments and many related lease charges are taxable. The lease disclosure should show how tax is applied.
Do I pay tax again if I buy my leased vehicle?
A lease buyout is a purchase transaction. CT DMV requires a bill of sale indicating sales tax was collected, along with other title and registration documents.
Is vehicle property tax included in the dealer’s out-the-door price?
No. Local motor-vehicle property tax is generally billed separately by the municipality and is distinct from purchase/lease sales tax and registration charges.
